The forerunner of the Saffron Building Society was founded in 1847 at Saffron Walden in Essex. In 1989, after a series of merger the society was renamed to be the Saffron Walden Herts & Essex Building Society. The society was renamed again in 2006 to become the Saffron Building Society. It is the 26th largest building society in the UK.
The society has 12 branches, located in Essex, Suffolk, Hertfordshire and East London.
