The forerunner of the Norwich Building Society was founded in 1852 and the Peterborough Provincial Benefit Society was founded in 1860. The Peterborough Building Society merged with the smaller Norwich Building Society in 1986 to create the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society. It is the 14th largest building society in the UK.
The society has 55 branches in eastern England, spread from Scunthorpe in the north to Chelmsford in the south, plus one in Gibraltar.
